1803 - Ralph Waldo Emerson, American essayist, lecturer, poet and philosopher. He led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. 1878 - Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, American tap dancer, actor, and singer, the best known and the most highly paid black American entertainer in America during the first half of the twentieth century. His long career mirrored changes in American entertainment tastes and technology.

1927 - Robert Ludlum, American spy author of 27 thriller novels, best known as the creator of Jason Bourne from the original The Bourne Trilogy series. The number of copies of his books in print is estimated between 300 million and 500 million. They have been published in 33 languages and 40 countries.

1938 - Raymond Carver (born Raymond Clevie Carver Jr.), American short-story writer and poet. His main characters are working-class Americans; his spare, tense prose reflects their attempts to express themselves. Several of his short-story collections were nominated for prestigious prizes, including Pulitzer Prizes. He is considered to be amongst America's greatest writers.

1659 - Richard Cromwell, son of Oliver Cromwell, resigns as Lord Protector, leading the way to the Restoration of the Monarchy and the reign of Charles II.

1870 - Leo Delibes's ballet Coppelia is first staged, in Paris. 

1895 - Playwright Oscar Wilde, convicted of "committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons",  is sentenced to two years' hard labour in Reading Gaol.

1937 - The first air mail letter to circle the globe returns to New York. 

1855 - Kanchenjunga, the 3rd highest mountain in the world after Mt. Everest and K2, is successfully climbed by British mountaineers George Band and Joe Brown.

1986 - An estimated six or seven million people participate in hands Across America, where Americans held hands for 15 minutes across the U.S. with the purpose of helping the homeless.  

1994 - The UN Security Council lifts its 10-year-old ban on weapon exports from South Africa. this scraps the last of its apartheid-era embargoes.
