1834 - Edgar Degas, French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. 1941 - Vikki Carr, American vocalist, born to parents with Mexican ancestry. She has performed in a variety of musical genres, including pop, jazz and country, while her greatest success has come from singing in Spanish. 64 C.E. - The Great Fire of Rome begins and rages for six days, destroying 3 of the 14 precincts of the city,  and damaging 7 more. Some Romans believe that Emperor Nero lit the fire; he is overthrown four years later.

1545 - The Mary Rose sinks during a military engagement with the French off Portsmouth. About 300 people drown. In 1982, the ship is raised and put in a British museum.

1588 - The Armada Day.  On this day the Spanish Armada is sighted off the south coast. The attack that follows led to the most famous naval victory in English history.

1799 - The Rosetta Stone is found by a French army engineer. As it was the time when Napoleonic war was going on, the British took it from him, transporting it to London.

1903 - Frenchman Maurice Garin wins the first Tour de France. Of the 60 competitors, only 20 finishes the race.

1946 - Marilyn Monroe takes her first screen test at 20th Century Fox Studios. On this day in 1946, Mrs. Norma Jeane Dougherty, former munitions factory worker and model, took a screen test at 20th Century Fox Studios. On August 26, she passed and signed a contract. The studio suggested her stage name to be "Marilyn" after the 1920s musical star Marilyn Miller. She decided on her surname (or last name) as "Monroe", which was her mother's maiden name.  She divorced her husband James Dougherty, an American merchant marine, in September.

1966 - Frank Sinatra (age 50) marries Mia Farrow (age 21). They divorce two years later.

2001 - Sir Jeffrey Archer, British politician and famous novelist, is sentenced to four years' prison for perjury and perverting the course of justice during a libel case he brought against the Daily Star newspaper in 1987.
