Celebrating 40 Years of Sydney Festival: Symphony in the Domain 2016

For the 40th anniversary of Sydney Festival, this year, 2016, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is doing something special for Symphony in the Domain (previously called "Symphony under the Stars"). They've gathered a repertoire of music performed at Symphony in The Domain over the years, with everything from Mendelssohn to Dvorak and Tchaikovsky.

The night with "Symphony in the Domain" is not just for Sydneysiders but for anyone interested and available. Find a patch of grass, bring your hamper, a blanket, family and friends, and get comfortable for an evening of delightful classical music.

Part 1

DVORÁK: Othello – Overture, Op.93
MENDELSSOHN: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op.64  (Soloist: Grace Clifford)

Interval

Part 2 

DVORÁK: Symphony No.9 in E minor, Op.95, B178 (From the New World)
TCHAIKOVSKY: 1812, – Festival Overture, Op.49 (with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs) 


Post-Performance Note, 17 January 2016:

BRAVO!  What  a magnificent performance from the SSO, multi-awarded violinist Grace Clifford, the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs; also, credit to the producers for such a big event, to program presenter Georgie Parker, and everyone involved.

An awesome finale of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture! Glorious voices of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, alongside the SSO, complemented by cannons, fireworks, bells and whistles! Also, kudos to SPC's Festival Chorus interspersed in ruby-coloured attires in various pods with a lovely surprise rendition of "Happy Birthday to You!" for Sydney Festival. A splendid night to remember!
