Birthdays

1869 - Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin, (born 21 January [O.S. 9 January), Russian monk, mystic self-proclaimed holy man who befriended the family of Tsar Nicholas II, the last monarch of Russia, and gained considerable influence in late imperial Russia. Rasputin had a religious conversion experience after taking a pilgrimage to a monastery in 1897. After traveling to St. Petersburg, either in 1903 or the winter of 1904–05, Rasputin became a society figure, and met the Tsar in November 1905. He began acting as a healer for Alexei, the Tsar and wife Alexandra's only son, who suffered from hemophilia. The high point of Rasputin's power was in 1915, when Nicholas II left St. Petersburg to oversee Russian armies fighting World War I, increasing both Alexandra and Rasputin's influence. As Russian defeats in the war mounted, however, both Rasputin and Alexandra became increasingly unpopular. In the early morning of 30 December [O.S. 17 December] 1916, Rasputin was assassinated by a group of conservative noblemen who opposed his influence over the Tsar & Alexandra. Historians often suggest that Rasputin's terrible reputation helped discredit the tsarist government, and helped precipitate the Romanov Dynasty's overthrow which happened a few weeks after he was assassinated.

1883 - Aleksei Nikolayevich Tolstoi, Russian/Soviet novelist, journalist, poet and short story writer, nicknamed the Comrade Count, who wrote in many genres but specialized in science fiction and in historical novels.  During World War II, he served on the Extraordinary State Commission of 1942-1947 which "ascertained without reasonable doubt" the mass extermination of people in gas vans by the German occupiers. During the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi war criminals,Soviet prosecutors recognized his work in the investigation of atrocities committed in the Stavropol region.

1945 - Sir Roderick David Stewart, CBE, commonly known as Rod Stewart, British Rock and Pop snger, songwriter and record producer. With his distinctive raspy singing voice, Stewart is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 250 million records worldwide. He has had ten number-one albums and 31 top ten singles in the UK, six of which reached number one. Stewart has had 16 top ten singles in the US, with four reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to music and charity.
