Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) composed Pikovaya Dama (The Queen of Spades), a three-act Russian tragic drama. Libretto was written by Modest Tchaikovsky based on a story by Pushkin.  It was premiered at St. Petersburg, Maryinsky Theater, December 19, 1890. The setting is in St. Petersburg, Maryinsky in the later 18th century.

Sadko is a Russian fairy tale opera in three acts written by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (March 18, 1844-June 21, 1908). He wrote the libretto with Vladimir Ivanovich Belsky, based on the 11th century Novgorod Cycle. It was first performed in Moscow, Solodovnikov Theater, January 7, 1898.

Notable arias:  Song of the Varangian merchant, Song of the Indian trader (Hindu merchant.) The chorus play a dominant part. The two buffoons are conventional figures.
