The Bélier Family French Film Review
Here are two of my favourite reviews for La Famille Bélier film: One is written for Sydney Morning Herald by Paul Byrnes, who describes it as a "charm and a knockout finale carry French comedy to the end" and the other, written for SBS by Rochelle Siemienowicz, the film as "A mix of sensitivity and rude exuberance."
The Official Trailer:
La Famille Bélier (English: The Bélier Family) is a French comedy-drama film directed by Eric Lartigau in 2014. It received six nominations at the 40th Cesar Awards, with Louane Emera (Paula, the 16 year-old daughter) winning the Most Promising Actress Award.
Plot Summary:
In the Bélier family, everyone is deaf except for 16 year-old daughter Paula. She therefore becomes an indispensable day to day interpreter for her parents and younger brother. The family runs a family farm. One day, a music teacher discovers her gift for singing; he encourages Paula to participate in a prestigious singing contest in
Paris, which will secure her a good career and a college degree.
The trouble is: this would mean leaving her family.
The song, "Je Vole" ("I'm Flying" or "I Fly"), sung by Louane Emera, becomes more moving and significant as she simultaneously uses the sign language while singing it. (Apology, this link is no longer available due to copyright reasons. Here's another link but with German sub-title: Je Vole / April 12, 2016)
