1838 - Queen Liliuokalani, Last Monarch and only queen regnant of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

1853 - Wilhelm Ostwald, Baltic chemist, philosopher and Nobel Laureate. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1909 for his work on catalysis, chemical equilibria and reaction velocities.

1877 - Frederick Soddy, FRS, chemist and Nobel Laureate, English radiochemist who explained, with Ernest Rutherford, that radioactivity is due to the transmutation of elements, now known to involve nuclear reactions. He also proved the existence of isotopes of certain radioactive elements.

1923 - Rene Thom, French mathematician, awarded the fields Medal in 1958. He made his reputation as a topologist, moving on to aspects of what would be called singularity theory. He became world-famous among the wider academic community and the educated general public for his work as founder of catastrophe theory (later developed by Erik Christopher Zeeman).

1948 - Sharon Christa McAuliffe, American teacher and astronaut from Concord, New Hampshire, and one of the seven crew members killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

1964 - Keanu Charles Reeves, Canadian actor. He had his breakthrough role in the science fiction comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. He gained praise for playing a hustler in My Own Private Idaho, and established himself as an action hero with leading roles in Point Break and Speed. Greater stardom came for playing Neo in the science fiction series The Matrix. He played John Constantine in Constantine and starred in the romantic drama The Lake House, the science fiction thriller The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the crime thriller Street Kings.  Reeves has directed the film Man of Tai Chi
  
1966 - Salma Hayek Pinault (born Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez), Mexican and American film actress and producer. Hayek's breakthrough role came in the 2002 biographical film Frida, a film which she co-produced and starred in as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. For her performance, she received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the first Mexican actress nominated in that category, in addition to nominations for the Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and British Academy Film Award for Best Actress. In 2017, she was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her role in Beatriz at Dinner.

1666 - The Great Fire Of London breaks our and burns for three days that destroys 10,000 buildings including the St. Paul's Cathedral.Despite having no organised fire service, only nine people died and it ended the bubonic plague outbreak of 1665. Many of the most important commissions to rebuild go to Christopher Wren, the greatest architect that time. 

1901 - Then U.S. Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt utters the phrase: "Speak softly and carry a big stick," that describes his idea of diplomatic negotiations backed with the threat of military force. This becomes known as the "big stick " diplomacy.

1945 - Japanese officials sign the act of unconditional surrender aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, ending the six years of World War II. 

1945 - Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh declares Vietnam an independent republic no longer under French rule.

1991 - The U.S. recognizes the independence of the Baltic states Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Four days later the Soviet Union also recognizes their independence.
