1899 - Charles Boyer, French-American actor. Boyer started on the stage, but
he found his success in American films during the 1930s. His memorable
performances were among the era's most highly praised, in romantic
dramas such as The Garden of Allah, Algiers, and Love Affair, as well as the mystery-thriller Gaslight. He received four Oscar nominations for Best Actor. He also appeared as himself on the CBS sitcom I Love Lucy.
1943 - David Soul (born David Richard Solberg), American-British actor and singer. He is known for his role as Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson in the television series Starsky & Hutch from 1975 to 1979. He became a British citizen in 2004.

1972 - U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz wins gold in the 200-meter butterfly at the Munich Olympics - the first record-breaking seven he'll win during the games.
1990 - Iraq proclaims Kuwait to be its 19th province.
