Historical Events


1789 - This day is Bastille Day. Some 800 Parisians armed with muskets and cannons attack the  Bastille, a medieval fortress used as a prison. They wipe out the garrison and free the seven prisoners. This event triggers the French Revolution.         

1791 - In Birmingham, England, the home and laboratory of chemist Joseph Priestley is burned by rioters because of his support for the French revolution. Priestley discovered oxygen. three years later he leaves for the USA.



1867 - Alfred Nobel demonstrates dynamite in a quarry in Surrey, England. He was an explosives manufacturer whose legacy continuously endows the Nobel Prize. The explosive is based on nitroglycerin which he combined with clay and a pinch of sodium carbonate, forming the mixture into short sticks with fuses.

1946 - The book The Common Sense book of Baby and Child Care of Dr. Benjamin Spock is published and becomes the child-rearing bible of the baby boom.

1958 - The monarchy of Iraq is overthrown in a violent military coup and 23 year old King Faisal is killed. Abdul Karim el Qasim leads thje coup. He becomes Prime Minister. He is also killed in the 1963 overthrow.
